Math Flowers is a perfect opportunity for us to incorporate literacy into the math block. The students must be able to solve word problems, they must be able to write word problems, they need to be able to understand word problems. On the petals they can start with their word problem that I give them. They must be able to pull out the vocabulary, the important words in that word problem. They will write the key words on the petals, in the middle of the flower they must put the operation that they're going to use in order to solve that particular problem. They can also draw a picture to help them solve that particular problem. So that is Math Flowers.
Activity Objective
The goal of Math Flowers: Writing and Solving Word Problems (Virtual Tour) is to promote the enjoyment of writing by integrating literacy with mathematics and to provide opportunities for exposure to and use of math terminology by writing to inform.
