Summarizing is a difficult strategy for boys and girls, so I give them simple ways to determine the strategy. For a non-fiction text we are looking for the main idea and summarizing of those details. For fiction text were looking for the problem and the solution. And I like for them to give me one or two sentences that will summarize the book or the text. After they have given me a summary, then they can get as creative as they can by illustrating that particular summary. Chrysanthemum is an example of one of the summaries that we do in the classroom. I read the story earlier in the week and this student chose to do her summary on the book that we've read. She illustrated it with the character there and the flower that represents her name.
