Engaging Students in Reading Comprehension Strategies

We're always trying to get our boys and girls to comprehend text. And anything we can do to make it more exciting for them, that's what we do. Here are several of the strategies that we are teaching our boys and girls: to visualize, to infer, to summarize, to use what they already know, and to make predictions. So we came up with this little song called Think. And it goes something like this: you better think, think about what the text is saying to you. You better think, think, think, think about what all the readers do. Oh think, think, think. What do you hear? Think, think. What do you see? Think, think. Woo, think. Think, think.

- Have your students think like detectives when they make predictions. Using magnifying glasses as props while making predictions is a fun and motivating way for students to become actively engaged.
- Select a variety of texts and genres for students to summarize.
