Literacy is also incorporated into science because of the amount of time in the day. We want to spend as much time on literacy as possible, so we make the connection in science. Students choose a science project. They must research that project using non-fiction text. We will conduct an experiment. They will learn to write the hypothesis, purpose, materials, procedures, results, conclusions, and put all of that in using what we write in the writing block, which is procedural text. We're also trying to get our boys and girls to improve their typing skills, so we will go to the computer lab and they must type out their projects and assemble them on the boards.

The goal of Creating Connections with Literacy: Writing a Scientific Procedure (Virtual Tour) is to help students develop an understanding of procedural writing and foster a motivation for literacy through integrated instruction.
