Naming Objects from the Sound Bin
Building Awareness of Initial Phonemes (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
This is a really fun activity which all started with me making alphabet bins with found things, borrowed things, things that were already in the classroom, my own children's bedrooms. So I have all of the phonemes, and here the children are sorting things that begin with /l/ and /o/. So I would take my octopus and say /o/o/ octopus belongs in the /o/ bin. Lettuce /l/l/ lettuce belongs in the L bin. Near the end of the year we would be working on digraphs such as /sh/ and /th/ and /ch/ where the two letters make just one sound or phoneme.
Activity Objective
The goal of Naming Objects from the Sound Bin: Building Awareness of Initial Phonemes (Virtual Tour) is to provide students with an opportunity to identify and classify initial phonemes.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- Keep students motivated by using a variety of found objects, such as small toys and word cards. - Provide ongoing opportunities for students to play with the individual sounds in spoken words through various activities, such as comparing words to see if the first sound matches, breaking words into their sounds, and switching single sounds in words.
