Treasure time is a great game to help reinforce the sounds that the children have learned. So I've taken the alphabet reference that we use in our writing center and just enlarged that, and the child digs into the box, chooses and item, and says the word that it is, then they have to figure out the sound that item begins with. So, /b/b/ bottle. They have to match it to the letter in the treasure map, so /b/. I've been careful to choose items that don't directly match the items in the alphabet reference. For example, if there's a dog on the page, I would not have the dog in the box. I might have a doll instead.
Here's an old fashioned close peg that has each child's photo on it. It's fun to have the children's pictures with their names in the treasure box so that they have to place their name in the initial phoneme that it belong on.
