Making Apple Sauce
Learning Procedure Writing in Kindergarten (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
One of the things I like to do in my kindergarten class is provide the children with authentic, real life experiences. And one of the things that is so much fun to do is make applesauce with the children. So, we've been talking about picking apples, going to the apple orchard, and then we brought the apples back and we went through the various steps. We washed the apples together, I peeled the apples, and then the children sat around at a table with some plastic knives and they cut the apples up as they were wearing their chef's hats. So they felt like they were really chefs. And they had lots of fun and then we put all the little pieces into the slow cooker and we made applesauce, and the children really enjoyed making it. And it's a great way to do procedural writing with little ones.
Activity Objective
The goal of Making Apple Sauce: Learning Procedure Writing in Kindergarten (Virtual Tour) is to engage students in a hands-on activity and help students begin to understand the structural features of procedure writing.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- Provide students with real-life and authentic experiences by setting up centers related to a theme.
- Integrate hands-on experiences, like making apple sauce, during the school year.
- Modeling recipe writing is a great way to introduce procedure writing. Keep the students engaged by demonstrating each step with appropriate items.
- Use pictures and visual cues for each step of the procedure.
- Have young students draw a picture in a four-square organizer for each step of the procedure.
