As many of our children are English Language Learners it's really important for them to have a very clear visual of the vocabulary that they're going to be learning. So when the firefighter was coming into the classroom, in anticipation of his visit, I went to Clip Art and I found images of all the equipment that the firefighter would use, and so we practiced it and the children knew it very well, so they could ask questions when he came in. This is an example of a shared reading chart that I made for the children, and once again, we're using very clear visuals so that the children can read many of the high frequency words on the chart but they might not get fire engine, garbage truck and so on, those difficult words. So they see the visual and they're using picture cues to solve the word. Another way the children can develop their vocabulary is through dramatic play and there's nothing they like more than dressing up as the police officer or the firefighter.
