Walk and Stop
Finding Letters and Common Words Around the Classroom (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
One of the things I like to do is make lots of copies of the high frequency words that have been introduced, and I put them at various places in the classroom. Because a game we like to play is called Walk and Stop. So we all stand up and we walk and we walk and we walk and we stop, and on the stop the children have to go and find letters and words.
Activity Objective
The goal of Walk and Stop: Finding Letters and Common Words Around the Classroom (Virtual Tour) is to provide students with opportunities to develop an understanding of the relationships between spoken sounds and written letters and help students to commit irregularly spelled high frequency words to memory.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- Make reference to words that are displayed around the classroom during read-alouds and discussions.
- As a class or in small groups, take a walk around the classroom and point out different words that are displayed.
- High frequency words are the words that appear most often in printed material. Direct students' attention to these words during read-alouds and shared readings.
- Discuss the importance of recognizing high frequency words by sight and the direct impact of this recognition to reading fluency.
- The more often students' are exposed to high frequency words the more likely they will be able to commit the spelling of these words to memory.
