Transcript

As the children engage and participate in interactive writing they're learning so many valuable concepts of print. They're learning directionality. They're learning where to start to write on the page and where to start to read on the page. They're learning spacing. They're learning punctuation. After the interactive writing lesson I like the children to sit down and try and do some independent writing, so that they can apply some of the concepts they've learned in the interactive sessions. And, this is an example of a math activity we were doing with shapes, and the children were writing stories about the pictures they had made with their shapes, because we like to incorporate literacy into our math program as well.

Activity Objective

The goal of Interactive to Independent Writing: Learning and Applying Concepts of Print (Virtual Tour) is to help students develop an understanding of the features of written language, including what books are, how text is organized, and how letters and words work.

Quick Tips

Additional Comments:

- Concepts of print include text directionality, spacing, function of letters, punctuation.
- Provide explicit teaching in how books are organized, where to start reading, and what the symbols on the page mean.
- During interactive writing, guide the process of writing and provide appropriate pacing and instruction when needed.
- Provide interactive writing opportunities for whole-group and small group instruction.
- At higher grade levels, interactive writing can also involve the features of various text types.
