Feedback is essential in the assessment process. It's important that the student knows their strengths and knows what their next steps are. In our classroom we've established feedback, that it can be given from the teacher, it can be given student to student. And in our persuasive writing unit, the feedback is specifically connected to every component of the success criteria for persuasive writing.
So when the students were giving each other a star for example, which is something they did well, it would be something specific to the persuasive writing. So, they used catchy language and they had to find evidence in the writing of where the catchy language was, so the student was aware of that strength. They might have given the student a wish, so, something that they could improve on next time, and they were specific enough, so for example maybe they didn't use enough juicy words, and the peer feedback would have pinpointed that by saying, perhaps maybe you could have used something instead of good all the time, or you could have started your sentences differently every time.
So the feedback is not just this is a good piece of work, or this is a nice piece of work, the feedback is directly related to the strength of the work and the next steps for the student. When the teacher reviews the piece of work, her feedback or his feedback is also directly related to the success criteria of the task.
