Word Banks
Supporting Spelling and Vocabulary Growth (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
To encourage a student's independence each student is given at the beginning of the year their own individual Word Bank. The Word Bank is a transition between the word wall and a more independent tool for each student. The Word Bank is already created for the student with high frequency words that are listed alphabetically. Each page has lines underneath, so as the student learns new words, new vocabulary, and their Word Bank grows they can write their words in themselves. The transition from the Word Bank is that students will be able to use a dictionary, so this is a solid piece of practice to recognize how words are arranged alphabetically and also be able to reference this tool independently.
Activity Objective
The goal of Word Banks: Supporting Spelling and Vocabulary Growth (Virtual Tour) is to help students commit the spelling of words to memory by providing them with an independent and personal word resource.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- The Word Bank is an independent tool for each student.
- High frequency words are the words that appear most often in printed material. Direct students' attention to these words during read-alouds and shared readings.
- Discuss the importance of recognizing high frequency words by sight and the direct impact of this recognition to reading fluency.
- Exposing students to new vocabulary words will help them expand their vocabulary.
- Providing opportunities to practice spelling words through a fun and motivating game will also help students commit the words to memory and will also promote the automatic use of the words when communicating with others.
