Writing persuasive advertisements was actually the culminating event in a unit that started with one read-aloud. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs launched the entire unit.
From this one read-aloud students inferred, students predicted, students also asked questions, and students decided that they would create their own weather forecasts for their community. So, we created reports, and from there they decided they would escape this town, and they would write narratives about their own imaginary town.
After creating a narrative they thought, well, why don't we create a real miniature version of our town, which they did, in a shoebox, with a very small budget. After creating their town in a shoebox, we had to get people to visit their town.
That's where persuasive writing came in. We examined how do people persuade people, how do they convince people to do something you want them to do, so they created their print advertisement, and of course that led to commercials. So students finished the unit with an oral communication and media and writing and reading marks in a commercial to get you to visit their imaginary town.
