When learning something new, whether you're a child, an adult, you need to know exactly what you need to do to be successful. When students are learning a new task, a new concept, they need to understand exactly what they need to do in order to experience success. If you're learning the sport of basketball you need to know that the basketball needs to go through the basket to win the game, that's just part of the criterion necessary that you need to learn.
So in our classroom when we were learning persuasive writing it was specifically laid out with students after examining various samples of persuasive writing what those criteria exactly were that you needed to follow to be successful. When we examine some print advertisements we notice that they were colorful, they were big and bold, and the picture immediately hooked the reader.
So the students decided that was a piece of criteria that was very necessary for success when they were creating their advertisement. They also decided that the picture should clearly describe the main idea. So if your advertisement is for Band-Aids you need to have some kind of picture that is clearly connected to your idea. Every piece of criteria that the students created it's in their language, so they understand exactly what is expected of them when they are creating their persuasive advertisement.
