The various district assessments that a teacher has to administer over the course of a year can contain some language that students are not necessarily familiar with, and you need to be careful not to assume that they know what the language means because it can change the outcome of the assessment. So throughout the year, we take some of those specific words and define them together, and then throughout the year I use them in my own assessments so that students are consistently familiar with them and they understand what the words mean. For example, if you're asking the students to draw a picture of something you might want to use the word diagram, a word that you've defined with the students, so that they know when they see that word diagram in their district assessment they will know what it's asking them to actually do.
