When the students enter the classroom in the morning it's important that they're immediately engaged in a task because they're all entering at different times and you're busy welcoming them into the classroom, or checking agendas, they need a task to immediately focus on. In our classroom we call it the E.M.A. an Early Morning Activity. It becomes part of our daily routine, the students look to it for their activity as soon as they get in the classroom. There's a notebook that is specifically for their E.M.A., and it is a formative practice of a concept that you've already taught. It's not a diagnostic assessment, it's something that the students feel comfortable doing, it won't take them very long to be successful, and it's something they can do independently before you start your whole group activity.
