Sound Circles
Sorting Objects to Build Phonemic Awareness (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
This is our Sound Sort. Basically, the children create sound circles with pipe cleaner, and then they sort our sound tubs. Here we've got the /s/ and /k/ sounds. We have a snake, a spider, and a sandwich in the /s/ circle. We have a car and crackers in the /k/ circle. An interesting aside, when the children are choosing objects to go in either circle, often they'll put the cereal in the /s/ circle.
Activity Objective
The goal of Sound Circles: Sorting Objects to Build Phonemic Awareness (Virtual Tour) is to provide students with an opportunity to play with the individual sounds in spoken words through a sorting activity.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- Have the students create circles or other 2-dimensional shapes using pipe cleaners. - Identify each object while modeling the activity so that the name of the object is clear. - As an extension activity have students sort middle and final consonant sounds.
