Take a Number!
Promoting Independence though Routines and Classroom Organization (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
I was inspired by the system that they use at the butcher shop to order individuals to create this system within my classroom called Take-a-Number. Basically, it's utilized when I'm in conferencing either reading or writing with a student and there are other students who would like my attention. For example they might want to celebrate something that they've created; if it doesn't require my immediate attention I ask them to please just take a number. This way when I'm done conferencing I can get around to all those students' needs. There are many uses for this system within the classroom. For example, if students are working in groups and we're going to present our work then this tool can be utilized to determine which number each group is going to present. When students are working in groups and they're trying to decide on who's going to go first, second, third, etcetera, and they cannot decide themselves then I'll simply say to them why don't you use Take-a-Number. When there's a particular material within the classroom that students like to utilize then I'll ask students to take a number so that can determine the order in which they're going to utilize that material. Basically, all I did was create cards from one to ten and laminated them and placed them in a container that I had lying around my house.
