Judy Blume is one of my favorite authors. It's a great starting place for students to start reading on their own in the 4th Grade. I believe that she has the innate ability to capture real children and their families growing, changing, and laughing together. There are illustrations in these novels, which really help students understand the characterization and the wit. These books speak to most students in my classroom. I find that they can all find a topic that Judy Blume has written about that pertains to something in their life.
Roald Dahl is one of the greatest storytellers of all time. The students really enjoy reading his books. They find them quite funny and also they are great opportunities for students to start to read something that is a little bit more sophisticated. His chapters are very well laid out and I often find that students can predict what the chapter is about just based on the title. I also find that these books are great for English language learners because there are images and that really helps them understand the content in the story.
