I begin the instructional day with a morning message. Students enter the classroom and refer to the whiteboard in order to understand the plan of the day. Here, they find something that has to do with the current unit under study. We are currently looking at Poetry, which is why the message has to do with that topic.
They look at the board, they get themselves ready, sit down, and complete the task at hand. I also use the whiteboard at the end of the day to write agenda items on the board. This way students know what is expected of them for that evening and for the rest of the week. On Fridays, I send a parent email. This is a great way to build community with parents. This lets parents know what we have done during the week, as well as what is to come the following week. I also share this email with students at the end of the day so that they understand what is going home and they can answer any questions that parents may have.
