Building Community with Parents
Overview (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
I don't send home traditional homework. What I like to do is send home one of three things that last the week. In order to build community with parents and let them know what we're working on in the classroom, I send home one of three things. Every week, students will either get Math is Fun, a Reading Log, or twenty Selfless Minutes. They have four nights, Monday through Thursday, to complete that task.

Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- It may be useful to create a communication book to send home with students so parents can let you know how the homework went. - A simple checkmark or short comment on students homework lets students and parents know that you're keeping track of their progress. - Not all parents are going to be able to help their children with the homework. Be sensitive to their situation so that they do not feel guilty if they cannot help. If the student is working independently, ensure they have the right tools for success.
