Building Community with Parents
Reading Logs (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
I also send home the Reading Log, and this alternates between Math is Fun or the twenty Selfless Minutes. On the weeks where students have their Reading Logs sent home, they are accountable for reading 20 minutes every night and having a parent sign off. Periodically, I ask students to write about their reading. When a Reading Log goes home, they could be asked about the plot, the main character, and the following day they are asked to share their work in class and talk about the book they are reading, and whether or not they would recommend it to someone else in the classroom.

Activity Objective
The goal of Building Community with Parents: Reading Logs is to motivate reading time between students and their parents at home for 20 minutes. After it is complete, the parent signs off. The students are asked questions about the plot or the main character and may have to write their response down. The following day, students share the book they are reading with the class and their thoughts on the book.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- If sharing with the class is too time-consuming to do every day, select one student per day or week to share their book with the class - Not all parents are going to be able to read with their child every night so encourage students to read to themselves or with siblings if possible.
