Taking Responsibility!
Classroom Jobs Can Be Rewarding (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
At the beginning of the year, we set up classroom responsibilities. This is a great way to keep order in the classroom and ensure that students are actively involved in the process throughout the day. Every week, different students are given a different responsibility. They are asked to do this on their own. When they do their task with few or no reminders, they're awarded a sticker. Every three stickers allows that student to enter a ballot into our Scholastics draw. Once a month, I draw a name, and that student is eligible to select a book in the Scholastics catalogue.
Activity Objective
The goal of Taking Responsibility! Classroom Jobs Can Be Rewarding (Virtual Tour) is to build a sense of community in the classroom and to ensure that all students participate in the process. Students are given a different responsibility each week. If they do their task with few or no reminders, they are rewarded with a sticker that is placed into a monthly book draw. The student whose name gets drawn is allowed to pick a book in the Scholastics catalogue (http://www.scholastic.com/).
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- For an extension of this activity, ask students to write a resume for the class job that they think they would like to do. - If this is too time consuming for your class, you can change student jobs every other week or less frequently as the year progresses. - If you don't do Scholastics with your school, talk to your class about what they think would be an appropriate reward for the draw.
