Building Community with Parents
Math Is Fun (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
Math is Fun is a great opportunity to build community with parents and really let them know what is going on within the classroom. I dont send home homework in the traditional sense. Ive developed a couple of different things in the classroom that go home on a weekly basis that allow parents to understand a little bit more about whats going on in the classroom. When I send Math is Fun home, its an opportunity for students to showcase what theyve learned in math with a parent or a sibling. They take home their math kit and an assignment that I place in their duotang at the start of the week and they have the week to complete this at home. These are always concepts that are taught and students have worked on in the classroom. One of the current activities that we were working on were shapes. Students were asked to take home tangram pieces and indicate to their parents what shapes were congruent. They were also asked to talk about different angles of the shapes. Finally, there was an interactive fun activity for them to do with parents, where they had to create animals using all seven pieces of the tangram kit.

Activity Objective
The goal of Building Community with Parents: Math Is Fun (Virtual Tour) is to allow students an opportunity to showcase to their parent or sibling what they've learned in the classroom at home. The teacher places an assignment into the Math is Fun duotang at the start of the week so that students and their parent get a week to work on the assignment with the math kit. The current topic on shapes allows students to indicate if tangram pieces are congruent. The activity allows students to incorporate applying math knowledge in a fun way while building community with a parent.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- Try creating a communication book to send home with students so parents can let you know how the homework went. - A simple checkmark or short comment on students homework lets students and parents know that youre keeping track of their progress. - Not all parents are going to be able to help their children with the homework, so make sure you notice who is working independently to ensure they have the right tools for success.
