Reading Comprehension Strategies

Transcript

Throughout the year, the students are introduced to different reading strategies. In this activity, the students made inferences about shoes that they saw, and they had to infer who they thought would wear these shoes. We introduced the activity, by first looking at a pair of shoes as a model. They were then given in groups, a photograph of different types of shoes, and as a group the students had to brainstorm who they thought would wear these shoes. They first looked at clues from the shoes. For example, they would look at how worn the shoes were, or if there was something specific about the type of shoe, if it was a worker's boot, they would note that in their evidence, and then they would also then use their evidence to make their inference about what this person would be doing. For example, if they thought the boot was from a construction site, then their inference would be that it would be someone who worked on a construction site. They then made an inference about that person based on the clues and small inferences that they made throughout the activity.

Activity Objective

The goal of Who Wears These Shoes?: Building Comprehension by Making Inferences (Virtual Tour) is to improve students' comprehension skills by providing practice in making inferences orally and in writing.

Quick Tips

Additional Comments:

- Making inferences and drawing conclusions are necessary for readers to develop deeper understandings of the text. Giving students an opportunity to infer about real objects provides an authentic context for learning.
- Facilitate the discussion by keeping the questions open-ended rather than leading the students to a correct response.
- Encourage students to extend their thinking by including evidence from the photos to support their inferences.
