At the beginning of the year, the students and I brainstorm together what a perfect classroom would look like and sound like. Based on this list, we come up with four classroom agreements, and they would be mutual respect, attentive listening, no put downs, and the right to pass. For each of those agreements, we spend a little bit of time in groups talking about what it would look like, and what it would sound like. From there, the students develop posters, and these posters are in their work, and these posters are also then put at the front of the classroom, and we refer to them throughout the year as a reminder of what our classroom should look like, and also the behavior of the students.
