As the students work on different types of writing throughout the year we brainstorm together what that writing would look like as well as the format for it. The information that we brainstorm together is written on a chart and posted above our word wall. So these anchor charts are referred to by the students while they are working on their writing. At the beginning of the year we started with what a perfect poster would look like, thats the first anchor chart that we have on our anchor chart wall here above our writing wall. The students then looked at features of a brochure. So we looked at different types of features of a brochure, and what it would include, including pictures, titles, and details for example. The students then refer to these posters while they are writing their own brochures. After the brochure poster, our next task would have been writing a summary. So the students then brainstormed with myself to decide what are the most important things that would be included in a summary.
From there, the next anchor chart we would have developed together would have be an anchor chart that deals with voice. So voice is a specific writing trait that we would include in our writing. And so, with the students we talked about a strong voice in our writing helps to persuade the reader, and how. The students and I then developed different ideas about how the voice, having a strong voice in our writing would persuade the reader. As the year continues on, our anchor charts grow on this wall here.
Our next one would have been writing a report. On this side the students and I decided what the requirements would be for writing a report, so what they need to include specifically. In a report we needed to include an introduction, a description of the event, and then the conclusion. For each of those requirements, we then decided the criteria, so how well we knew that we were doing those tasks. So for example for an introduction we decided that the criteria would include a main idea as well as interesting words to catch the reader's attention. Our next anchor chart deals with letter writing. And that was the task that we just recently did on our writing wall. For our letter writing anchor chart we looked at the format of a letter, and decided what needed to be at the beginning, middle, and end of a formal letter. Finally, the last anchor chart that we have above our writing wall deals with a specific task that we did for our writing piece this month. This task was about the students writing a letter to a specific character from a book.
