Guided Reading
Promoting Fluency and Comprehension in Third and Fourth Grade (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
Throughout the week I meet with groups of students for a guided reading session. The groups depend on their reading level, as well, the groups can be mixed abilities, when they're focusing on a specific reading strategy from our CAFE menu. While we're at our guided reading session, I refer to the strategies that we would use when we're reading words. As well, the students focus on a specific strategy that they would discuss with me before reading the text, during the reading, and after the reading. While the students are reading silently to themselves I will point to one student and ask them to read in a quite whisper so that they're not disrupting the other students, but then I'm also able to make some assessments on their fluency during this guided reading session.

Activity Objective
The goal of Guided Reading: Promoting Fluency and Comprehension in Third and Fourth Grade (Virtual Tour) is to promote students' use of a variety of effective strategies to improve their understanding of what they read as well as provide extensive appropriate practice with reading aloud.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- Small-group instruction provides opportunities for the teacher to offer guidance and feedback to all students.
- Guided reading sessions should be kept between 10-20 minutes and can be of mixed-ability or leveled groupings, depending on the lesson begin taught. Choose texts that are appropriate for your lesson.
- Focus on a reading strategy with which a small group of students are having difficulty. Introduce vocabulary and invite the students to make predictions before reading.
- Have the students read the text silently. As students read to themselves invite each group member to read aloud in a quiet whisper voice. Record anecdotal notes in a conference binder.
- Ask questions to ensure comprehension.
