This is our phonics, phonemes, and self-selected reading center. And this is one of the centers that the students can work at independently while I am working with a small group of students in the guided reading area. It is called Imagination Island because we do a variety of things here. For example, we have Fishing for Phonics, and the students really enjoy this game. They will take the fishing pole and they would figure out which picture they would like to fish for. So they would find, for example, the football. And they will have to take the fishing pole, place it inside of our little ocean of things here and locate the correct beginning consonant. And, for example, if I pull out the wrong consonant I would just take it off and place it back in there and continue to fish for phonics, fish for the correct beginning letter.

The goal of Fishing for Phonics: Developing Letter-Sound Correspondences (Virtual Tour) is to help students develop an understanding of the relationships between spoken sounds and written letters.
