Teacher: Okay boys and girls, we're going to begin our fluency passage. Before we begin our fluency passage, who can tell me, what does it mean to read fluently? [Student's Name]?
Student: To read with expression.
Teacher: Very good. To read with expression. Let's look at our fluency passage for today. We're going to do two fluency strategies. We're going to echo read, and we're also going to close read, okay? I'm going to read first, and then you're going to read after me. Does everyone understand?
Students: Yes ma'am.
Teacher: Very good. ''I went to see the play Cinderella.''
Students: ''I went to see the play Cinderella.''
Teacher: ''I enjoyed it because the costumes were beautiful.''
Students: ''I enjoyed it because the costumes were beautiful.''
Teacher: Now we're going to work on our second fluency strategy, which is closed reading. That means I'm going to begin reading, and when I stop you're going to fill in that sight word, or that vocabulary word. Does everyone understand?
Students: Yes ma'am.
Teacher: Okay, are you ready?
Students: Yes ma'am.
Teacher: Here we go. ''I went to''
Students: ''see''
Teacher: ''the play Cinderella. I''
Students: ''enjoyed''
Teacher: ''He married Cinderella''
Students: ''at''
Teacher: ''the end.'' Very good. Now let's discuss some of these words in our fluency passage, okay? It says: ''There was a handsome prince who threw a huge ball.'' Now we don't mean a big huge ball like you may play volleyball with, or throw outside. A huge ball. What do you think a huge ball is? [Student's Name].
Student: A huge ball is like going to a prom.
Teacher: Okay, something like going to a prom. You may be going to a big gathering where everyone is dressed in their nice formal wear, nice long gowns. Those are just some of the words that are in our story.
