Go Chart
Understanding Story Elements in First Grade (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
The purpose of a Go Chart is to break down those story elements, like the author, the illustrator, the characters, the setting, and also the plots. After reading the story A Family's Market by Theresa Volpe, the students were able to create a Go Chart. And the Go Chart consisted of making predictions, listing characters, and creating a setting. Now the predictions were listed before the students began to read the story, and after they read the story the students listed the characters and wrote the setting.
Activity Objective
The goal of Go Chart: Understanding Story Elements in First Grade (Virtual Tour) is to help students understand story elements including characters, setting and plot.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- Displaying charts in the classroom provides students with a reference during reading and writing tasks. - Predictions refer to making a guess or an inference about what is going to happen. Emphasize the importance of using information from the story as evidence to support predictions. Explicitly show your students how to go back into the text to find information that supports why you think your prediction could be true. - Have your students think like detectives when they make predictions. Using magnifying glasses as props while making predictions is a fun and motivating way for students to become actively engaged.
