Guided Reading
Promoting Fluency and Comprehension in First Grade (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
This is our guided reading area, and in this area I'm working with a small group of students, and while I'm working with these students the other students are in the other centers, such as the Imagination Island, Seashell Counting, and Exploring the Sea, and the listening center. And those students are to be working independently and they're to be actively engaged in their activity. But in this center we are working on fluency strategies, and letter sounds. And while the students are reading, they can use these Whisper Phones to hear themselves read, and so they can pronounce the words properly. After we have finished reading our story, we use the story board to talk about various story elements. We can also relate back to concepts of print.
Activity Objective
The goal of Guided Reading: Promoting Fluency and Comprehension in First Grade (Virtual Tour) is to promote students' use of a variety of effective strategies to improve their understanding of what they read as well as provide extensive appropriate practice with reading aloud.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- Small-group instruction provides opportunities for the teacher to offer guidance and feedback to all students. - Guided reading sessions should be kept between 10-20 minutes and can be of mixed-ability or leveled groupings, depending on lesson begin taught. Choose texts that are appropriate for your lesson. - Focus on a reading strategy with which a small group of students are having difficulty. Introduce vocabulary and invite the students to make predictions before reading. - Have the students read the text silently. As students read to themselves invite each group member to read aloud in a quiet whisper voice. Record anecdotal notes in a conference binder. - Ask questions to ensure comprehension.
