Reading Workshop
Teaching and Practicing Reading Comprehension Strategies (Virtual Tour)
Activity Description
Preparation:
-
Choose a comprehension strategy
- Use a teacher's guide book, like Reading with Meaning by Debbie Miller, to help you choose a comprehension strategy to focus on for the reading workshop
-
Base your choice of comprehension strategy on the needs of the students
- For example, focus on the strategy, determining main ideas when students are having difficulty with identifying the main ideas of the story
-
Prepare a response activity
-
Use a teacher's guide to help you prepare a response activity
- For example, search for an appropriate comprehension strategy in the Food Groups tab on www.LitDiet.org
-
Use a teacher's guide to help you prepare a response activity
-
Gather materials
- Chart paper and markers are quick and affordable tools to use during whole class and small group activities
-
Choose a book to read aloud
- Choose a book that allows you to model and explicitly teach the comprehension strategy
-
Read through the book and note 3-4 appropriate places in the text to model the comprehension strategy
- You may wish to use sticky notes in the text as a reminder
Implementation:
Session 1:
- Introduce the comprehension strategy by referring to a poster or writing the strategy on chart paper
- Discuss the strategy with the students by asking them when they have used this strategy in their reading
-
Introduce the title of the book and read the book aloud
-
Stop at various points during the read aloud to model the comprehension strategy
- For example, think aloud about making a prediction
- Read through the book before the lesson and select 3-5 points to stop and model the strategy
-
Stop at various points during the read aloud to model the comprehension strategy
-
Have students discuss the various points in the story during which you used the comprehension strategy
- Have students tell why this strategy is important
- List ideas on a chart paper
- Have students brainstorm when they might use this strategy during independent reading
Session 2:
-
Introduce the comprehension strategy response activity
- Review the strategy with the students if session 2 occurs on a new day
- Model the response activity
-
List 3-4 steps on a chart paper
- Visual cues are also helpful for students to understand the activity
- Review the activity to check for understanding
-
Have students complete the response activity
-
Students may work as a whole class, in small groups or independently
- Ensure that students understand the task by rotating around the room
-
Students may work as a whole class, in small groups or independently
- Regroup to share responses and ideas
Session 3:
-
Review the comprehension strategy as a whole group
- You may wish to discuss the response activity the students completed in session 2
-
Have students find a comfortable spot in the classroom to read independently
- Encourage students to use the comprehension strategy while they read independently
- Have students refer to the comprehension strategy charts
-
Meet with students in small groups (2-4 students) or individually
-
Discuss the book the student is reading
- Ask questions about the topic, characters and main ideas
-
Discuss how the student is using the comprehension strategy independently
- Model how to use the comprehension strategy if necessary
- Have the student choose a goal to work on during independent reading
- Use a notebook to track students'progress
-
Discuss the book the student is reading
Adaptations For
English Language Learners/ESL:
- Pre-teach vocabulary - Use visual cues and picture prompts when listing information - Preview the activity and steps involved - Pause frequently during instruction - Use personal connections during the read aloud and instruction
LD/Reading & Writing Difficulties:
- Use explicit modeling and instruction - Repeat information and check for understanding - Provide audio books and links to stories online - Consider student interest and choice when selecting books
Cultural Appropriateness & Diversity:
- Allow students to make personal connections during discussion - Consider texts with multiple languages - Consider texts with culturally diverse characters and/or texts from different cultures
Differentiated Instruction:
- Use flexible groupings for small group instruction - Encourage and acknowledge varied responses during discussions - Write instructions in different colors or in other formats (e.g., sticky notes)

Activity Objective
The goal of Reading Workshop: Teaching and Practicing Reading Comprehension Strategies (Virtual Tour) is to provide students with opportunities to improve comprehension by modeling comprehension strategies and facilitating comprehension activities at all stages of the reading process (before, during, and after reading).
What You Need
Prep Time:
10-20 minutes
- Choose a comprehension strategy for the focus of the lesson (e.g., visualizing)
- Use a teacher's guide (e.g., Reading with Meaning by Debbie Miller, www.LitDiet.org), to prepare a response activity or mini-lesson
- Gather materials required for the response activity
- Choose a related book to read aloud
Task Time:
3, 20-minute sessions
Session 1:
- Teacher introduces a comprehension strategy
- Teacher reads a book aloud, stopping at various points to highlight the use of the comprehension strategy
- Students discuss the comprehension strategy
- Teacher uses chart paper to record ideas
Session 2:
- Teacher introduces and models response activity
- Students work as a whole class, in small groups or independently to complete the response activity
- Students return to a whole group to discuss their responses
Session 3:
- Students read independently
- Teacher meets with students in small groups or independently to discuss or assess reading progress
Materials Required:
Teacher:
- Texts for read alouds
- Chart paper
- Markers
- Variety of materials for response activities
Students:
- Book bins
- Reading notebook
Optional:
- Whiteboards
- Interactive whiteboard (Promethean or SMART Board)
What You Do
Teacher Role:
Direct instruction:
- while introducing comprehension strategy and reading aloud
Facilitator:
- while students discuss comprehension strategy and complete response activity
Consultant:
- while students read independently
Student Grouping:
Whole class:
- during read aloud, discussion and response activity
Individual:
- during response activity and independent reading
Assessment Ideas:
- Meet one-on-one with students regularly to track their reading progress, record their strengths and next steps
- Have students track their reading by writing the titles of their books in a reading journal
Quick Tips
Activity Extensions:
- Integrate topics from social studies and science into the reading workshop
- Incorporate drama, movement and actions into the response activities
- Use other forms of media, like videos and posters, to model and practice using comprehension strategies
- Have students record their questions, predictions and connections in a Reader's Notebook and respond to their ideas in a personal letter
Additional Comments:
- Listening comprehension, such as read alouds, is a great way to introduce and model comprehension strategies, especially when struggling students are working on decoding skills.
- As decoding skills improve, have students apply comprehension strategies during independent reading.
- Display anchor charts and student work around the classroom.
- Refer to anchor charts and model comprehension strategies on an ongoing basis to help students work towards using strategies automatically.
Other Adaptations/Modifications:
- Strategically seat students who might require cues to refocus
- Provide a quiet working space for students disturbed by sound
- Assistive technology provides students with independence
