At the beginning of the year, I read the morning message to the students. As we move on and as their comfort level grows and as their reading level grows, we do shared reading with the morning message. Eventually they take turns reading sentences in the morning message. Eventually they get a day where they get to read the whole morning message themselves. And where we are right now is that I write a morning message and they need to read it, and as you can see behind me, they have to find the mistakes in the message. And eventually near the very end of the year, they get to write their very own morning message.
A morning message is a quick and easy thing we do in the classroom, but it really promotes the importance of real world reading. The kids figure out that they need to read the morning message to get important information for the day. Often times there's a question or a little tidbit about what's happening during the day, and right now's a sweet spot because the kids are really taking ownership over finding mistakes and they can't wait to make their own message. I think they're ready.
