Ingredients for a Poem
Using the Writing Workshop in Primary Grades (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
In our grades one, two and three classroom, we use The Writing Workshop Program by Lucy Calkins. In my class, in grade two, we start with writing about small moments, then we move into non-fiction writing, and we finish off with poetry. Behind me are the ingredients every poet needs to write a poem: they need big strong feelings, they need to look at the world through a poet's eyes, and they need to learn how to add rhythm, rhyme which are basically line breaks into their poem. One of the wonderful things about this program, it really emphasizes that students need to write about what they know. Students need to write about what they are passionate about, and every lesson, all seven of them, has that underlying theme. What's really wonderful too is that my classroom uses the same writing program as our grade two partner classrooms and I'm able to modify and adjust instruction as it need be for my students. And a really exciting way that we show what we know is we use iPads as opposed to pencils and paper, which match perfectly with the writing workshop program.
