It's important to use a wide range of assessments. For example the Empower Assessment allows us to see how well a student can analyze letters, sounds and words. But we also use assessments that help us check out a students reading style. So in this classroom we also use the Developmental Reading Assessment, or the "DRA."
This assessment helps us gage what type of reader a student is. It checks in on fluency and it checks in on comprehension. This one-on-one assessment allows the teacher and student to find just the right level a student is at. But it doesn't stop there, it's important that throughout the year teachers and students continue to check in with each other, always making sure we're pushing the student to the next level.
The DRA also helps the teacher put together guided reading groups, grouping students together based on their level. Making sure that students can learn together and push each other's learning together.
