Writers Workshop
Engaging Kindergarten Students in Writing (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
Writer's Workshop is a really important component of our program in order to get the children to share ideas in written form. But the first way to do that is by getting children to close their eyes and think of an idea in their head. And once they think of that idea, then we get them to draw a picture. Once they draw a picture, that inspires them to write about the picture that they've drawn. It also allows them to share their ideas with their friends. And once that happens they're able to go and sit down and write a story. A story doesn't have to be done all at once. A story can be done in stages, that's the wonder of Writer's Workshop. Close your eyes, think about the story that you'd like to write about today. If you'd like to write about what you did on the weekend, what you did on Shabbat, what you might be doing this week, or maybe your favorite ice cream trip, or a trip that you took with your mum and your dad and your family. I have started a Writer's Workshop activity with my children by allowing them to create a puppet. Once they created the puppet, they had to give their puppet a name. And when they gave their puppet name, they had to think about a story that would go along with their very special puppet. And so each child on a daily basis is given a small amount of time to add to their story and develop their story line. It's a lot of fun and a wonderful way to inspire children to write stories.
