Learn About Time
Using the Daily Schedule to Develop Skills in Time (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
The daily agenda is made available to the children every morning. When the children enter into the room they have a look at what their learning opportunities will be for the day. I may choose a math activity for the children. As part of the math activity I will get them to have hands-on crafts that they can create on their own. Because children learn best with activities that are hands-on and things that they've made by themselves. For children, the concept of time is not so easy. I have a timer that I use within my classroom. This timer has helped for the children to gain understanding of: Is there a lot of time left, is there a little time left, and when the beep goes off on my timer the children clearly understand that's time for this activity to end. I can show the children that they have five minutes to do an activity, or if we had our iPads out, they would definitely want more time than five minutes. So they would beg me to turn the timer to perhaps 20 minutes or half an hour. As the time passes the red mark slowly dissipates and the children are aware: "Uh oh time is going, I must continue and I must continue to completion because when that beep sound happens, our time is finished." The children created these clocks of their own through everyday cereal boxes. They were so excited to make their own hands on the clock, put the numbers on, and learn, themselves, how they can move the hands of time; and follow whether there is a lot of time, or a little time, that they are going to have, to do any of the activities that they're interested in.
Activity Objective
The goal of Learn About Time: Using the Daily Schedule to Develop Skills in Time (Virtual Tour) is to help students develop skills in telling time and use a timer as a classroom management tool.
Quick Tips
Additional Comments:
- Have students create their own clocks using cereal boxes and construction paper.
- Refer to the timer when you start an activity so that the students know how much time they have to work on an assignment.
