Jolly Phonics
Teaching Letter Combinations (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
The children are introduced to the fact that two letters together may have one sound, as in the two letters "O" and "A", in the word "GOAT". They will then use this book and find a word that may incorporate the sound, as in the word "TOAST, and find the picture that will go along with the sound. Teacher: On my chart I showed you how to form the letter "A" and "I", and they make one sound, /a/. Can you find something in my picture that has the same sound as /a/? He found a creature outside, and that creature is a "SNAIL". Do we hear the /a/ sound in the word "SNAIL"? Students: Yes. Teacher: Is it at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of the word? In the middle.
Activity Objective
The goal of Jolly Phonics: Teaching Letter Combinations (Virtual Tour) is to use a method introduced by Sara Wernham and Sue Lloyd to help create an awareness of how letter combinations can create individual sounds in spoken words.
