The Rabbi of a Hebrew Day School
Educating the Whole Child
Transcript
Everything we do surrounds around the children. Their growth, their future, and how they can each be a leader in their own way, in their families and in their community. We provide an education that is holistic as far as their Jewish heritage and the basic skills, the development of traditional Torah values, that are needed to produce a solid citizen that respects this community, respects knowledge and learning. And the only way that we feel that we can be successful in accomplishing that, is by providing every student the skills and the building blocks they need to be successful. It is said about the Gaon Vilna, that he used to stand up in his old age for the Rabbi that taught him to read the alphabet; the Alaphbet, which means you have a Rabbi who is steeped in the Talmud and knows the mystiques of all there is in Torah knowledge. And, he's providing respect and admiration for the one that taught him how to read the Alaphbet, who gave him the foundation and the skills of literacy, comprehension, and the ability to be an independent learner. With those skills, he went on to become one of the most gifted and prolific Torah scholars, who was respected not only by his own community but was respected the world over. Each and every student, each and every teacher, provides the love, the warmth, and most of all, the individual skills that every child will need in order to be a learner. To be able to read both in his Hebrew studies, in his Secular studies, from the pronunciation of every other letter straight into the texts of the Torah of the Talmud. The ethics, as well as every secular book that's needed to provide the balance that these children as adults will need to be successful, respected by their own families, and their communities, and hopefully by the myriad of individuals with whom they will interact with throughout their lives. We're very, very proud of all that we are doing here and very proud of all of the resources that have come together within the school in order to help every student, every teacher, every family, feel the success and pride of being a learner and a successful student.
