'Five Little Latkes'
Fostering Motivation For Literacy with Holiday Connections (Virtual Tour)
Transcript
I teach within a Hebrew day school, but my role is in the general studies department. However I still feel that it's important to make connections to our Jewish heritage. And that way I've connected the Hanukah time to a math activity and a motivation for literacy activity within my Five Little Latkes activity. I have the children create a fry pan, and along with the fry pan goes this lovely little song. Which is connected with Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, but instead of "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed," we have "Five Little Latkes Frying in the Pan." And the children really enjoyed reading this, singing this, and sharing it along with the fry pans that they made on their own. It's an independent lesson in math as well, because as they remove those latkes that are jumping out of the pan they're counting and they're subtracting. It's a great way to incorporate math into my Hanukah time activity but I do this with many holidays and you can as well.
